HARPS, or High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, is a spectrograph that has been specifically designed to detect extrasolar planets. The instrument has been in use since 2003 and has been installed in various telescopes around the world, including the ESO 3.6m telescope in Chile, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and the William Herschel Telescope in Spain.

While HARPS was originally developed for detecting planets, it has also been used in other astronomical research, such as studying stellar activity and studying atmospheres of exoplanets. However, one lesser-known application of HARPS is its use in relation to concerts.

Yes, you read that right – concerts.

In recent years, astronomers and musicians have teamed up to use the precision of HARPS to measure the acoustics of performance venues. By analyzing sound waves reflected off the surfaces of walls, ceilings, and floors, they have been able to create detailed maps of the soundscape of different concert halls.

One example of this collaboration is the project known as “The Stradivarius Sound Secret”. Led by a team of researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology, the project aimed to study the acoustic properties of the “Il Cremonese” violin, an instrument made by famed violin maker Antonio Stradivari in the late 1600s.

To do this, the researchers mounted the violin onto a turntable and played a variety of notes and tones while recording the sound using specialized microphones. They then used HARPS to analyze the sound waves bouncing off the walls, floor, and ceiling of the room. By doing so, they were able to map out the exact locations of high and low frequencies in the room, finding hotspots and dead spots for specific ranges of notes.

The information collected from these studies can be extremely useful for musicians and composers looking to create music that makes the most of the acoustics of a given performance space. By understanding how sound waves interact with different surfaces, performers can adjust their playing technique and musical arrangements to create the best possible experience for their audience.

While it may seem like an unlikely pairing at first, HARPS and concerts have proven to be a fruitful combination. By bringing together two seemingly disparate fields, astronomers and musicians have been able to learn from each other and create new knowledge that benefits both science and the arts.
