Led by a team of researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology, the project aimed to study the acoustic properties of the “Il Cremonese” violin, an instrument made by famed violin maker Antonio Stradivari in the late 1600s.
To do this, the researchers mounted the violin onto a turntable and played a variety of notes and tones while recording the sound using specialized microphones. They then used HARPS to analyze the sound waves bouncing off the walls, floor, and ceiling of the room. By doing so, they were able to map out the exact locations of high and low frequencies in the room, finding hotspots and dead spots for specific ranges of notes.

By understanding how sound waves interact with different surfaces, performers can adjust their playing technique and musical arrangements to create the best possible experience for their audience.
