When thinking of Harvey in relation to Broadway shows, the first thought that comes to mind is the classic comedy play, "Harvey," by Mary Chase. Originally written and staged in 1944, "Harvey" tells the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a man who insists his best friend is an invisible six-foot tall rabbit named Harvey.
The play was a hit in its original Broadway run, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1945. It has since been adapted into several formats, including a popular 1950 film starring James Stewart as Elwood and the 2012 Broadway revival starring Jim Parsons.
But "Harvey" isn't the only Broadway show to feature the iconic character. In 1970, composer and lyricist Leslie Bricusse wrote a musical adaptation titled "Harvey," which had a brief run on Broadway. The show starred Donald O'Connor as Elwood and was noted for its catchy tunes, including "Myrtle Mae," "The Harvey Song," and "Where Did My Childhood Go?"
Aside from its titular character, Harvey has also made appearances in several other Broadway productions. In 1987, he made a cameo in the musical "Me and My Girl," directed by Mike Ockrent and choreographed by Gillian Gregory. And in 2006, he featured in the Tony Award-winning musical "The Drowsy Chaperone," a tribute to classic Jazz Age musicals.
Beyond Broadway, Harvey has become a cultural icon in his own right. He has appeared in countless films, TV shows, books, and even video games. In recent years, he has made a comeback in new adaptations of "Harvey," including a planned movie starring Adam Driver and a stage production set to premiere in London's West End in 2022.
