On May 22, 2021, the Hometown Heroes Festival for Matthew Conley was held to support and celebrate one of our own warriors from Carroll County, Maryland. The festival was hosted by the organization A Warriors Mind and was a day filled with fun outdoor activities, delicious food, live music, and a silent auction - all to raise funds for Matthew’s recovery.
Matthew Conley is an exceptional athlete who has been selected multiple times to represent his high school, Manchester Valley, on both the varsity basketball and lacrosse teams. Unfortunately, Matthew had a severe accident that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in a traumatic brain injury. Since this injury, he has undergone various surgeries and intensive therapies to try and regain his ability to move, speak, and live independently. Matthew's road to recovery is a difficult journey, but one that his family and friends are supporting him in strides.
As expected, many people from the Carroll County community came out to show their love and support for Matthew's journey. This event brought together not only those who knew Matthew personally but sports enthusiasts that recognize the importance of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance, qualities that make great athletes. These traits were all present in Matthew before the accident and are a testament to his strength during recovery.
During the festival, there were many activities that reflected Matthew's interests. Two all-day lacrosse games were played, where players could register individually or as teams for $100, with proceeds going towards the event's designated fundraising campaign. The games were entitled "Sticks Up for Matt" and had a rowdy cheer of attendees celebrating teamwork and enthusiasm for the sport.
A particularly exciting event was the "Dunk-A-Cop Booth," where our local police officers were willing to take some pool dips if participants could dunk them by throwing balls at the target. Some dance performances were also presented, to appreciate the local performers whilst enjoying some great food and drink from various vendors. Additionally, there was a silent auction with many items up for bid ranging from sports equipment to signed merchandise.
The Hometown Heroes Festival for Matthew Conley and hosted by A Warriors Mind is more than just a fundraiser; it was an event that proved the power of community. People from all walks of life came together to show their support for someone who demonstrated strength, resilience, and tenacity both in and out of his sporty pursuits. The festival indicated how support can help athletes strive for excellence while overcoming obstacles.
All of us who participated in the festival, have witnessed the value of teamwork, both on and off the field. The Hometown Heroes Festival for Matthew Conley showcased unity from local businesses, sports fans, and volunteers coming together to provide support that will help cover the costs of medical treatments that are not covered by health insurance. Events such as this remind the world of what it means to be part of a community and improve athlete welfare when times are hard.
