For many comedians, the road to success is a long and winding one, with unexpected twists and turns along the way. That was certainly the case for Hooter Moreno, who took an unusual path from working on the staff at a comedy club to performing on stage as a comedian in his own right.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Moreno started working at the Houston Improv when he was just 19 years old. Initially, he worked behind the scenes, handling everything from seating guests to cleaning up after shows. However, he quickly became enamored with the world of comedy and began studying the comics that came through the club.
Over time, Moreno's interest in comedy grew, and he began to envision himself performing on stage. However, he was also aware that getting into stand-up comedy was notoriously difficult, and he wasn't sure how to make the leap from being a behind-the-scenes staffer to a full-fledged comic.
Eventually, Moreno decided to give it a shot. He began writing material and practicing at open-mic nights around Houston. It wasn't easy – in fact, Moreno later admitted that he bombed at some early shows – but he was determined to keep going.
In 2012, Moreno got his first big break when he was selected to perform at the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs festival. This was a huge milestone for him, as it put him in front of a global audience and showcased his comedic talents to industry insiders.
Since then, Moreno has continued to rise through the ranks of the comedy world. He's appeared on numerous TV shows, including "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and "Last Comic Standing," and he's performed at clubs and festivals all around the country.
Looking back on his journey from club staffer to successful comedian, Moreno recognizes that it was his passion for comedy that kept him going. "I always knew that I wanted to be on stage entertaining people," he says. "I just had to figure out how to make it happen."
For aspiring comedians who might be in a similar situation – working behind the scenes at a comedy club, dreaming of one day performing on stage – Moreno has some simple advice: don't give up.
"It's not an easy road, but if you really want it, and you're willing to put in the work, you can make it happen," he says. "Keep writing and practicing, and keep putting yourself out there. And don't be afraid to fail – because trust me, we all do."
