The Huntsville Stars were a Minor League Baseball (MiLB) team that played in the Double-A Southern League from 1985 to 2014. The team was named after the region’s rich aerospace industry, which makes sense given that Huntsville has been home to numerous NASA facilities and contractors since the 1950s.
Over the course of their three-decade history, the Stars had a number of notable players that would later find success in the MLB. Among those players were Jermaine Dye, Rick Helling, Casey McGehee, Ryan Braun, and Prince Fielder. In fact, during their time in Huntsville, the Stars won five Southern League championships and sent dozens of players to the big leagues.
The Huntsville Stars were also notable for their stadium, Joe W. Davis Stadium, which underwent several renovations throughout its tenure. The stadium was built in 1985 and had a capacity of 10,488 fans at its peak. But over the years, the stadium lost some of its luster and became outdated in comparison to newer MiLB stadiums around the country.
Despite this, the team still enjoyed a strong following in Huntsville and the surrounding areas. Fans would come out in droves during game days, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere that made it clear just how much the citizens of Huntsville loved their local ball club.
Unfortunately, in 2014, the Huntsville Stars relocated to Biloxi, Mississippi, where they became known as the Biloxi Shuckers. The move was due in part to financial struggles faced by the franchise, as well as the desire for a newer and more modern stadium.
While it was undoubtedly difficult for the fans of Huntsville to see their beloved Stars leave town, the legacy they left behind lives on. Their five championships, numerous MLB stars, and dedicated fan base are all testaments to the incredible impact that minor league baseball can have on a community.
As for the future of baseball in Huntsville, it remains uncertain. But thanks to the success and influence of the Huntsville Stars, there is no doubt that any team that plays in this city will have some big cleats to fill.
