Il Trittico is a set of three one-act operas by the celebrated Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. The three operas in Il Trittico are 'Il tabarro', 'Suor Angelica', and 'Gianni Schicchi'. Each opera tells a distinct story, with unique characters and settings. Despite their differences, each opera explores themes of love, loss, and redemption, making for a cohesive and engaging experience.

Classical Opera refers to a particular style of opera that emerged in the 18th century and was popularized by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Christoph Willibald Gluck. This style placed a great emphasis on the balance and structure of the music, and often involved arias, recitatives, and ensembles that were performed by a full orchestra with singers accompanied by only a few instrumentalists.

While many people associate classical opera with the works of Mozart or Verdi, Puccini's Il Trittico is an excellent example of how this particular style of opera can be adapted and modernized. Puccini's music style is known for its sensuous melodies, dramatic chords, and lush harmonies which are evident in each of the three operas that make up Il Trittico.

The first opera in Il Trittico, 'Il tabarro' (The Cloak), is a stark drama that takes place on a barge along the Seine River, where love, jealousy, and murder unfold. Characterized by dark tonal colors, low vocal ranges, and relentless rhythms, Puccini’s music adds an air of tension and intrigue to the bleak setting, which is complemented by expressive and realistic descriptions in the libretto.

The second opera 'Suor Angelica' (Sister Angelica) is much more intimate and deals with the life of a young nun who has been sent away to a convent for disgracing her family. Set in a cloistered garden, the opera has a simple plotline, with a single protagonist, however, Puccini's use of tonality and harmony to express the emotional depth and spiritual conflicts of the central character makes it no less profound. The music features minimal orchestration but is rich in melody and harmonic color with expressive writing for solo voice.

The final opera in Il Trittico, 'Gianni Schicchi', is a comic opera full of laughter, deception, and satire. Based on an episode from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, the opera tells the story of a wealthy Italian family who seeks to alter their late relative's will so they can inherit his wealth. However, Puccini's masterful use of comedy is anchored by genuine emotion and pathos, bringing new depths that are often missing from pure farces.

In conclusion, Il Trittico is a great example of how classical opera need not be relegated to the past. Puccini’s masterful manipulation of tonality, harmony, and orchestration have created a unique and modernized version of the genre. While the three operas in Il Trittico offer diverse stories and settings, they are linked by Puccini’s inventive and expressive music which immerses the audience into each individual narrative that run the gamut of emotions, and leaves them transported and entertained until the end.
