Born Jerry Brooks in 1965, J.B. Smoove grew up in Mount Vernon, New York. After attending Norfolk State University in Virginia, he moved back to New York City to pursue a career in comedy.
Early in his career, J.B. Smoove appeared on a number of stand-up comedy shows, including Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam. However, it was his work as a writer and performer on the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm that really put him on the map.
On Curb Your Enthusiasm, J.B. Smoove plays Leon Black, the wise-cracking friend of Larry David's character. His improvisational skills and ability to play off David's deadpan style have made him a fan favorite on the show.
In addition to his work on Curb Your Enthusiasm, J.B. Smoove has appeared in a variety of other TV shows and movies. He has had recurring roles on the sitcoms The Millers and Angie Tribeca, and has also appeared in films like Top Five, We Bought a Zoo, and Hall Pass.
