From his first role in a high school production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons to his most recent portrayal of John Proctor in The Crucible on Broadway, Franco has proved himself as a talented and versatile theater actor. Franco credits his love for theater to his upbringing in Palo Alto, California, where he was introduced to the performing arts at a young age. In an interview with The Guardian, he said, "There wasn’t a big theatre community there – it wasn’t like there were theatres all around San Francisco – but it did have a kind of bohemian atmosphere. So, yeah, my parents took me to a lot of plays."

He appeared in their productions of House/Lights and Cry, Trojans! (Troilus & Cressida), both of which received critical acclaim.

Franco's passion for theater extends beyond acting and directing. He has also taught classes in acting and playwriting at multiple institutions, including UCLA, NYU, and USC. He founded Studio 4, an acting school and film production company, in Los Angeles in 2014, with the aim of providing students with a more hands-on approach to learning about the craft of acting.
