When many people think of Jane Fonda, they likely associate her with her successful career in film and television. However, the iconic actress also has a rich history in theater, dating back to the beginning of her career in the 1960s.

Fonda first appeared on stage in a production of “There Was a Little Girl” in 1960, shortly after studying at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City. A year later, she made her Broadway debut in the play “Invitation to a March,” which earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Fonda continued to appear in various stage productions, including the off-Broadway play “The Fun Couple” and the West End production of “There Was a Crooked Man.” She also starred in the critically acclaimed Broadway plays “Tall Story” and “Strange Interlude.”

One of Fonda’s most memorable performances on stage came in 1982, when she starred in the play “The Dollmaker” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Her portrayal of Gertie Nevels, a Kentucky woman struggling to adapt to life in Detroit during World War II, earned her rave reviews and a Drama Desk Award.

In addition to acting, Fonda also worked behind the scenes in theater as a producer. In partnership with her then-husband Tom Hayden, she founded the Indochina Peace Campaign, which produced several shows focused on political and social issues.

Fonda’s dedication to theater as an art form has been long-standing, and her contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2004, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award for her contributions to the theater community.

Though she has since shifted her focus primarily to film and television, Fonda’s impact on theater remains significant. Her impressive body of work on the stage serves as a testament to her talent as an actress, producer, and overall creative force.
