Jared Leto has had a storied career as an actor, director, and musician. But many people may not know about his roots in the theater.

Born in Bossier City, Louisiana in 1971, Leto was raised in a creative household. His mother was a photographer and his father was a businessman who dabbled in art. As a child, Leto found himself drawn to the idea of performing and began taking on roles in school plays.

In high school, Leto was involved in theater productions and even earned a scholarship to attend the University of the Arts in Philadelphia to study acting. After completing his studies there for less than a year, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.

While in New York, Leto landed several roles in off-Broadway productions including “The Cider House Rules” and “Slab Boys.” These productions helped him gain experience and recognition in the industry, leading to his breakout role in the television series “My So-Called Life.”

Leto continued to work in both television and film, but his passion for the stage never waned. In 2002, he returned to the theater in the Broadway play “Prozac Nation,” written by Elizabeth Wurtzel.

In a 2007 interview with Interview Magazine, Leto said “I just love the immediacy of the theater. There’s something that I find incredibly exciting about it... You’re working with other actors and you have to rely on them, and they have to rely on you.”

In recent years, Leto has been mostly focused on his music and film projects, but theater remains a part of his heart. He has even expressed interest in directing a Broadway play someday.
