Jersey (new) Moves! is a platform for emerging choreographers in New Jersey that brings together artists from the dance and theater communities. The program, which is part of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), supports the development of new work and fosters collaboration between artists in different disciplines.

One of the most interesting aspects of Jersey (new) Moves! is the way it blurs the lines between theater and dance. While all of the works presented on the program are rooted in movement, many of them have strong narrative elements that make them feel more like plays than traditional dance pieces. This is particularly true of works by choreographers who come from a theater background.

For example, in 2018, Jersey (new) Moves! featured a piece called "A Change is Gonna Come" by choreographer Nicole Clarke-Springer. The work, which was inspired by the #MeToo movement, focused on the experiences of three women who have been impacted by sexual harassment and assault. Through a combination of dance, spoken word, and video projection, Clarke-Springer created a powerful and timely exploration of a complex social issue.

In addition to encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, Jersey (new) Moves! also gives emerging choreographers the opportunity to experiment with new approaches to movement and performance. Many of the works on the program are highly experimental and push the boundaries of what we typically think of as dance.

For example, in 2019, the program featured a work called "Scapegoat" by choreographer Christina Castro-Tauser. The piece was performed entirely in silence, with the dancers communicating solely through gesture and facial expression. Castro-Tauser used this constraint as a means of exploring the ways in which non-verbal communication can be both liberating and limiting.

Overall, Jersey (new) Moves! is an important platform for emerging choreographers in New Jersey, offering a supportive environment where artists can experiment with new forms and collaborate across disciplines. By encouraging artists to push the boundaries of what we traditionally think of as dance, the program is helping to expand our understanding of movement and performance more broadly.
