Music

JFK Jukebox may sound like a contradiction, but it is a real thing. The jukebox was first introduced in the 1930s as an invention that allowed people to play their favorite music on demand in public places like diners, bars and clubs. Its popularity grew throughout the decades, but it is still surprising to learn that JFK had a jukebox installed in the White House.

John F. Kennedy was a lover of classical music, yet he also enjoyed other genres such as jazz and Broadway tunes. So in addition to his extensive record collection of classical music, JFK also had a jukebox filled with a variety of musical selections.

The JFK jukebox contained 44 records, which were chosen by the President himself. The selections ranged from classical pieces like Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" to popular hits like Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" and Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco". JFK even included African American artists such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong in his selection, which was quite progressive for the time.

JFK's decision to install a jukebox in the White House was met with some criticism. Some believed that it was not appropriate for the President to have such a frivolous item in the Oval Office, while others saw it as a way for JFK to connect with the younger generation.

Regardless of the criticism, JFK's love of music was evident throughout his presidency. He famously hosted a concert in honor of cellist Pablo Casals at the White House in 1961. JFK spoke at the event, stating, "This is what our country is all about – a land where a Pablo Casals can come, and in the company of its great musicians, bring joy and pleasure to millions of people."

JFK's jukebox is now housed in the Kennedy Library in Boston, where visitors can see for themselves the musical selections of the President. While it may seem like an unlikely pairing, the JFK jukebox and classical music show that music has the power to bring people together and bridge cultural divides.
