Born Joseph Glenn Herbert on June 2, 1971, in Tacoma, Washington, Koy was raised by his mother and grandmother after his father left the family when he was just 10 years old. Growing up in a predominantly African American community, Koy learned how to make people laugh as a survival tactic. He often felt like an outsider because of his mixed-race heritage, but his humor helped him connect with others.
Koy began his career as a stand-up comedian in Las Vegas in the mid-1990s. At that time, he performed at open mic nights and small clubs, honing his craft and developing his comedy style.
