After studying theatre at Bethel University in Minnesota, Joel began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s. He honed his skills performing at comedy clubs and colleges across the country, eventually catching the attention of HBO executives who featured him on their Young Comedians Special in 1988.
Shortly after that, Joel created MST3K, which premiered on a local Minneapolis station in 1988 before being picked up by Comedy Central. The show became a sensation and quickly gained a dedicated following. Joel played the lead character, Joel Robinson, a janitor who is trapped aboard a spaceship with his robot companions and forced to watch terrible B-movies.
What set MST3K apart from other shows was the unique concept of "riffing" – Joel and his robots would provide humorous commentary throughout the films, adding witty jokes and clever insights that often surpassed the entertainment value of the movies themselves. MST3K quickly became a fan favorite and ran for 11 seasons until it was cancelled in 1999.
In addition to MST3K, Joel has appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, Freaks and Geeks, and the Adam Sandler comedy, Pixels. He also wrote and directed the film, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.
