John Glenn is a name that has been associated with many great accomplishments, from his achievements as a pilot and astronaut to his time serving as a United States Senator. What many people may not know, however, is that John Glenn was also a great lover of theater.

Born on July 18th, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, John Glenn grew up with a love for the arts. In high school, he participated in drama productions and even won the lead role in his senior year play. After graduating high school in 1939, he went on to attend Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, where he continued to explore his passion for theater.

During his time at college, Glenn was an active member of the theater club and starred in several productions. He even met his future wife, Anna Margaret Castor, through the theater group. The two were both chosen to star in a production of “The Merry Widow,” and they hit it off immediately. They were married just a few years later, in 1943.

After finishing college, Glenn enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and saw combat in World War II. When the war ended, he returned home and continued performing in local theater productions while working as a test pilot. In 1957, he became one of America’s first astronauts, and in 1962 he became the first American to orbit the Earth. Throughout his career as an astronaut and politician, however, he never lost his love for theater.

In 1998, at the age of 77, John Glenn made a return to the stage. He appeared in a production of Thornton Wilder's “Our Town” at the Heritage Theater in Hilliard, Ohio. Glenn played the role of the Stage Manager, a character who acts as a narrator and guide throughout the play. The performance was a resounding success, and Glenn received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.

John Glenn’s love for theater was evident throughout his life. It brought him joy, helped him connect with others, and allowed him to express himself creatively. He once said, “The arts are what make life worth living. You’ve got to have somebody introducing something new and different into your life.” John Glenn will always be remembered as a pioneering astronaut and politician but to those that knew him well, he will also be remembered as an actor, a performer, and a true lover of the arts.
