Keenen’s family was immersed in the world of entertainment from the start, with his father being a comedian and his siblings also venturing into acting and comedy. Keenen took after his father and started performing stand-up comedy while attending college in Tuskegee, Alabama.
After graduating, Keenen moved to Hollywood and landed a spot on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in 1985. He then went on to create, write, produce, and star in the groundbreaking comedy show “In Living Color” in 1990. The show featured a cast of mostly African American comedians and actors, including his siblings Damon, Kim, Shawn, and Marlon, and launched the careers of Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx.
“In Living Color” was unlike anything on television at the time, with edgy humor, political satire, and musical performances that pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable on network television. It paved the way for shows like “Chappelle’s Show” and “Key & Peele” and helped bring diverse voices to the forefront of comedy.
In addition to his work on “In Living Color”, Keenen has had an extensive career as a writer, director, and actor. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 1996 film “A Low Down Dirty Shame” and produced several other movies, including “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” and the “Scary Movie” franchise.
