The American Bison, or the Last American Buffalo as it is sometimes called, has a storied history in the United States. These majestic creatures once roamed the plains in great numbers, numbering upwards of 60 million at their peak in the 19th century.

However, due to overhunting and habitat loss, the bison population plummeted to just a few hundred by the late 1800s. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population has rebounded somewhat, with an estimated 350,000 bison living today.

One place where the Last American Buffalo has had a presence is on Broadway. In recent years, there have been several shows that have featured the bison either as a character or as a symbolic representation of the American West.

In 2013, the musical Hands on a Hardbody debuted on Broadway. Based on a documentary film of the same name, the show follows a group of contestants who compete in a grueling endurance contest to win a new truck. One of the contestants, named J.D., sings a song called "Hunt With the Big Dogs" in which he references buffalo hunting. While the song doesn't necessarily glorify the sport, it does acknowledge its role in American history.

Another show that features the bison is the 2012 production of Big River. This musical adaptation of Mark Twain's classic novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn includes a scene in which Huck encounters a herd of buffalo while floating down the Mississippi River. The animals are described as "big and fierce," and serve as a reminder of the wild beauty of the American frontier.

Perhaps the most well-known instance of the Last American Buffalo appearing on Broadway is in the show Oklahoma! Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and first performed in 1943, Oklahoma! tells the story of a young cowboy named Curly who falls in love with a farm girl named Laurey. One of the most famous songs from the show is "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," which includes the line "The corn is as high as an elephant's eye / An' it looks like it's climbin' clear up to the sky." This evocation of the American West includes a reference to bison, which would have been a common sight on the plains in the time period when the musical takes place.

While the Last American Buffalo may not be a major player in Broadway shows, its presence in several productions shows how ingrained the animal is in the mythology of the American West. From its role in Native American cultures to its importance in the frontier era, the bison has become an enduring symbol of the wild, untamed spirit of America.
