When we think of the United States Marine Corps, we often picture a stoic and disciplined group of men and women. However, behind this tough exterior lies a sense of humor that is as important as physical fitness or combat skills.

That's where Laugh for Leathernecks comes in - a comedy program developed specifically for Marines and their families. Founded by comedian Mark Lundholm, a recovering addict who found solace in stand-up comedy, Laugh for Leathernecks aims to bring laughter and levity to the sometimes-grueling experience of military life.

Laughter has long been recognized as a powerful tool for stress relief and mental health; studies have shown that laughing releases endorphins, reduces cortisol levels, and improves circulation. For service members dealing with the daily stressors of military life, including prolonged separation from loved ones, grueling physical training, and the constant possibility of deployment, laughter can be a lifeline.

As Lundholm explains, "Military audiences want to laugh at themselves, because they know how hard it can be. There's so much respect, there's so much honor, and there's also pain and sacrifice. You need some release."

Laughter can also serve as a crucial bonding mechanism among individuals who might otherwise have little in common. A shared sense of humor can cultivate camaraderie and make difficult situations more bearable. "It's an opportunity to bring people together," Lundholm says. "They're all wearing the same uniform, but they don't necessarily know each other. If we can bridge that gap through humor, that's fantastic."

The power of comedy to bring people together is something that many who have served in the military can attest to. Comedian and military veteran Pete Davidson, who lost his father in the September 11th attacks and went on to join the cast of Saturday Night Live, has spoken about the role that humor played in connecting him with others during his time in the Navy.

"When you're in boot camp, it's the hardest thing ever," Davidson told GQ. "You're getting yelled at all day. They take your phone away... and then all of a sudden somebody makes a joke and everybody laughs. You're stuck with these people 24/7 for three months, and those little moments make it feel like it's worth it."

Laugh for Leathernecks recognizes the power of humor to bring Marines and their loved ones together, to reduce stress and promote positive mental health, and to foster a sense of camaraderie that can help military personnel get through even the toughest of times. By bringing comedy shows to bases around the country, Lundholm and his team are doing important work to support the men and women who sacrifice so much to serve our country.
