Laurie Rubin is a mezzo-soprano opera singer who has had an exceptional career in classical music. Beyond her success as a performer, Rubin has been a champion of inclusivity in the arts and helped break down barriers for performers with disabilities.
Born in California in 1977, Rubin was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at a young age. This degenerative eye disease caused her vision to deteriorate gradually until she became completely blind around the age of 11. Even though her vision declined, Rubin’s love for music never waned. She studied piano and voice throughout her childhood and eventually attended both San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Yale University’s School of Music.
Rubin made her professional operatic debut in 2004 with the Long Beach Opera in a production of Philip Glass’ “Einstein on the Beach.” Since then, she has performed with some of the most prestigious opera companies and symphonies in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a singer, Rubin has a rich, full-bodied voice that allows her to bring emotional depth and nuance to the characters she portrays. Her performances are marked by a sense of intimacy and vulnerability, qualities that allow her to connect deeply with audiences.
