Leland Melvin is not only known for his work as a NASA astronaut, but also for his involvement in sports. In fact, sports played a significant role in shaping him into the man he is today.

Melvin was born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia where he showed an early talent for football. He went on to become a standout athlete at Lynchburg's Heritage High School. His athletic ability led him to play college football for the University of Richmond where he became a top performer on the field.

After graduation, Melvin pursued a career in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1986, but sustained an injury during a practice game that ended his professional football career before it started. Despite this setback, Melvin did not lose his passion for sports.

In 1992, he began working at NASA as an engineer and helped develop some of the science experiments taken on space shuttle missions. But it wasn't until 1998, when he was selected to participate in NASA's astronaut program, that his love for sports took on a new dimension.

While training for his first mission, Melvin would spend hours on the treadmill and stationary bike to maintain his physical fitness. But it was bouncing around in the zero-gravity environment of space that really brought back memories of his days playing football. Without the familiar pull of gravity, he found himself constantly having to readjust his movements and rely on muscle memory and balance in order to move and work effectively inside the spacecraft.

In 2008, Melvin made history as the first former NFL player to travel to space. During his two STS-122 missions aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis, he used his unique experience and perspective to inspire and educate other athletes about the importance of STEM education.

Today, Melvin serves as a mentor and adviser to aspiring astronauts and young people interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields. He also continues to be an avid supporter and promoter of sports throughout the country.

In 2015, he founded the Space Trampoline Program -- a program that promotes human space exploration by combining the excitement of spaceflight with the physical and mental benefits of trampoline exercise. The program was designed to help young people develop strength, coordination, and balance -- all skills that are essential for success in both sports and spaceflight.
