Burton’s love of acting onstage began in college when he studied drama at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. After graduation, he began his stage career with a number of small roles in regional theaters in England and the United States. Eventually, he landed a lead role in Roots: Part 2, a London production of the popular miniseries.
From there, Burton began to take on more prominent theatrical productions and in 1981, he made his Broadway debut in an update of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Burton landed the role of Mercutio alongside Raul Julia as Shakespeare’s tragic hero, which helped to solidify his status as a serious theater actor.
But it wasn’t just Broadway that Burton was interested in. He also had a deep passion for regional theater, returning to his alma mater USC in the late 1980s to direct their production of the play Fences by August Wilson. Additionally, Burton developed a one-man show called Looking for Life in which he entertained audiences with anecdotes from his own life and discussed his experiences with fame and the entertainment industry.
Despite his busy schedule with television work, Burton has continued to maintain an active presence in the theater world. In the early 1990s, he took on the lead role in the musical The Boys of Winter, which explored the relationship between a father and son on a hockey team. More recently, LeVar Burton has returned to his Shakespearean roots, performing as Prospero in The Tempest for South Coast Repertory Theater in California.
Perhaps Burton’s most impressive contribution to the theater world is the idea behind his one-man show – engaging with audiences and sharing personal stories. In 2017, he launched a new show called LeVar Burton Reads Live!, where he reads short stories and comic books while providing commentary and interaction with the audience. This event brings together enthusiastic Reading Rainbow viewers, theater audiences, and fans of fantasy and science fiction.
Burton’s versatility as an actor was recognized with the Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Rootsgas, and he continues to make waves in his latest project. LeVar Burton may be most well-known for his work on television, but he has been, and continues to be, an important part of modern American theater.
