Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, may not be someone who immediately comes to mind when thinking about theater. However, his life and times are actually closely related to this art form.

Lombardi was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1913 and grew up in a Catholic family. His father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was of German descent. While Lombardi had an interest in sports from a young age, he also loved the arts and literature. He attended St. Francis Preparatory School where he played football and ran track, but he also acted in school plays.

After high school, Lombardi briefly attended Fordham University where he continued to play football and act in theater productions. However, he ultimately transferred to St. Thomas College in Minnesota to focus on coaching and teaching.

It was in the sports world that Lombardi made his mark, first as an assistant coach at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey before moving on to become an assistant coach at Fordham, Army, and the New York Giants. In 1959, he was hired as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, where he turned the struggling team into one of the best in the league with a total of five NFL championships in seven years.

While Lombardi’s success is undoubtedly due to his dedication and skill as a coach, it’s important to note that his approach to coaching and leadership had a theatrical quality to it. In fact, Lombardi was known for his motivational speeches, which were often filled with metaphors and references to literary classics like Shakespeare and Kipling.

One of Lombardi’s most famous speeches is known as “What It Takes to Be Number One”. In this speech, he states, “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is,” and goes on to discuss the importance of teamwork and sacrifice. It’s a speech that could easily be performed on a theater stage, and it’s no surprise that it has been used in films, commercials, and even political campaigns.

Lombardi’s love of the arts didn’t stop with literature and theater, however. He was also an avid collector of art and had a particular fondness for Pablo Picasso. Lombardi saw similarities between the drive and passion of an artist and that of a football player, stating, “In some ways, artists and athletes are not different – they both need to be inspired to produce their best work.”

Vince Lombardi passed away in 1970 at the age of 57, but his legacy continues to inspire athletes and leaders today. While he may not have been a performer on a theater stage, his life and times were filled with the same passion and dedication that make for great drama. From his early days as a student actor to his career as one of the greatest coaches in sports history, Vince Lombardi reminds us that true greatness requires talent, hard work, and a bit of dramatic flair.
