Linda Lavin is an American actress who has made a name for herself in the world of theater, television and film. Although she is known for her versatile talents across all genres, her roots have always remained firmly planted in live performance.

Born in Portland, Maine in 1937, Linda Lavin grew up with a love for theater. She took drama classes in high school and went on to study at The College of William and Mary before beginning her career in New York City in the early 1960s. Throughout the decade, Lavin was a regular performer in off-Broadway productions, appearing in shows like "A Family Affair," "It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman!" and "Little Murders."

In 1973, Lavin's breakout role came when she starred in the Broadway production of "Tales of the Allergist's Wife." She received rave reviews for her portrayal of Marjorie, a wealthy New Yorker suffering from a mid-life crisis. The show ran for over 700 performances, propelling Lavin into the national spotlight and earning her a Tony nomination.

Lavin continued to shine on the Broadway stage throughout the 1970s, starring in productions like "Broadway Bound" and "The Diary of Anne Frank." However, in the 1980s, she shifted her focus to television, playing the titular character on the hit sitcom "Alice." The show ran for nine seasons and earned Lavin a Golden Globe Award.

Despite her success on TV, Lavin never lost her passion for theater. In fact, she continued to work in both mediums simultaneously throughout her career. In the 1990s, she starred in the Broadway productions of "The Sisters Rosensweig" and "Death Defying Acts," before returning to television in the hit crime drama "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

In 2013, she returned to Broadway in the critically acclaimed production of "The Lyons," earning another Tony nomination for her performance as a dysfunctional matriarch. She has also appeared off-Broadway in productions like "Our Mother's Brief Affair" and "Chasing Mem'ries."
