Led by head coach Stephanie Oliver, the Blackbirds have consistently made it to the NEC Tournament in recent years. In the 2019-2020 season, the Blackbirds finished with a record of 15-15 overall and 10-8 in conference play. They were seeded fifth in the NEC Tournament but unfortunately lost to Saint Francis University in the quarterfinals.
Despite this setback, the Blackbirds continue to be a strong competitor in the NEC. Coach Oliver leads a talented team that includes senior guard Andra Espinoza-Hunter, who was named All-NEC First Team in the 2019-2020 season. Junior forward Jerice Crouch and sophomore guard Kiara Bell were also named to the All-NEC Third Team and All-Rookie Team, respectively.
The Blackbirds' success can be attributed to their emphasis on team-oriented basketball and strong defensive play. They have proven to be a difficult opponent for other teams to score against. In the 2019-2020 season, the team ranked in the top five in the NEC for both points allowed per game and field goal percentage defense.
Offensively, the Blackbirds are led by Espinoza-Hunter and Crouch, who averaged 14.3 and 12.8 points per game, respectively, in the 2019-2020 season. Freshman guard Brandy Thomas also showed promise, averaging 8.6 points per game in her first collegiate season.
The Blackbirds also have a rich history in women's basketball. In 2001, they won the NEC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The team has also produced several notable alumni who have gone on to successful professional careers, such as WNBA players Jessica Glaz and Erica Morrow.
