LMNOP is inspired by Mark Dunn’s 2002 novel, Ella Minnow Pea. This book focuses on Nollop Island and its residents who forbade the use of various letters from their vocabulary after a statue dedicated to the creator of the phrase, "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" started losing its tiles. In this story, residents could face punishment if they used any of these banned letters – LMNOP was one of them.
The LMNOP musical premiered in 2013 at The Norma Terris Theatre in Connecticut, created by Scott Burkell (lyrics, book) and Paul Loesel (music). It tells the story of a city (Nollop) on an island where letters are disappearing from the alphabet one after the other. As the letters disappear, so too does communication, resulting in chaos and misunderstanding. Ultimately, it’s up to the children of Nollop to come together and restore order to the island.
