Luminato is one of the most highly anticipated and celebrated arts festivals that takes place in Toronto every year. This spectacular festival is renowned for bringing some of the biggest names in the world of classical music together to create an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

The festival’s close ties to classical music are undeniable. Luminato has always been a platform for new and exciting musical collaborations that often cross genres and boundaries, with classical music being no exception. The festival has been known in past years for bringing together some of the biggest stars from the classical scene.

In 2019, the Luminato Festival made headlines by teaming up with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) to put together a breathtaking performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, also known as the “Symphony of a Thousand”. For this incredible performance, conductor Sir Andrew Davis led over 1000 musicians from around the world, including the TSO, five Canadian choirs, and over 300 young musicians, in a stirring rendition of the famous work.

The Luminato Festival has also played host to some incredibly talented solo artists and ensembles of the classical music world. In 2015, the festival presented an unforgettable concert by acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell, accompanied by the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Then in 2018, Luminato welcomed the lauded Kronos Quartet back to the stage, this time joined by Malian musician Trio Da Kali. Together, they performed a series of mesmerizing compositions that showcased both their individual talents, as well as their ability to collaborate across cultural and genre lines.

It is clear that for Luminato Festival, classical music remains an integral component of its programming. Whether through innovative collaborations or simply providing a platform for some of the world’s top soloists and ensembles, Luminato has become a destination for those eager to experience the many wonders of classical music.
