Maometto II is an opera seria in two acts by the celebrated Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. It was first performed on December 3, 1820, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Italy. The work's libretto was written by Cesare della Valle and is based on a French play titled Les Gabins ou Lyon et Venise by Etienne de Jouy.

The opera tells the story of the Turkish ruler Mehmed II (better known in the West as Mohammed II) and his invasion of the Italian city of Negroponte in 1470. The central focus of the story is on the political and personal relationships between Mehmed and the Venetian general Paolo Erisso, who has been taken prisoner during the siege.

Many critics consider Maometto II to be the pinnacle of Rossini's musical output. The opera incorporates many elements of Classical Opera, such as recitative and aria, but Rossini's approach to these elements is distinctly his own.

For example, in Maometto II, Rossini frequently uses what is known as "secco recitative." This is a type of recitative in which the accompaniment is limited to a simple chord progression played by a harpsichord or piano. Unlike other composers of the time, however, Rossini infuses his secco recitative with subtle melodic embellishments that make it more expressive than others in the Classical Opera genre.

Another characteristic of Rossini's music in Maometto II is his use of rapid-fire vocal passages. These are designed to showcase the technical virtuosity of the singers. In many ways, this style of singing foreshadows the bel canto opera of the Romantic era, which would follow shortly after Rossini's death.

Despite its historical subject matter, Maometto II remains a thoroughly engaging work that speaks to audiences today. The opera's complex characterizations and emotional intensity set it apart from other operas of its time.

In recent years, the opera has seen a resurgence in popularity, particularly in North America. A notable production was mounted by Santa Fe Opera in 2012, directed by David Alden and conducted by Harry Bicket. This production was praised for its inventive staging and powerful performances, which captured the full emotional range of Rossini's score.

Overall, Maometto II stands as an important work in the tradition of Classical Opera. Its seamless fusion of historical drama and musical virtuosity sets it apart as a masterpiece of the genre.
