Marin Mazzie was an accomplished Broadway actress whose career spanned over three decades, with notable roles in musicals such as Ragtime, Passion, and Kiss Me, Kate. Mazzie, however, had a deep connection to the world of classical music, which began at an early age.

Growing up in Rockford, Illinois, Mazzie started studying voice when she was only 13 years old. She continued her studies at Western Michigan University and went on to earn a master's degree in voice from the University of Michigan. During her time at Michigan, she focused on opera and performed in productions of La Bohème and The Elixir of Love among others.

Mazzie's passion for classical music stayed with her throughout her career on Broadway. Her powerful soprano voice allowed her to excel in roles that required a classically trained singer, such as Clara in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion and Mother in Ragtime. She also played Lilli Vanessi/Katharine in Kiss Me, Kate, a role that requires a singer who can handle both operatic and musical theater styles.

Beyond Broadway, Mazzie remained committed to classical music. She lent her voice to numerous concerts and benefits over the years, including starring in the New York Philharmonic’s staged concert version of Carousel in 2013, which was broadcasted on PBS Great Performances.

Mazzie also gave back to those interested in classical music, with education initiatives that encouraged children to learn about this genre. She worked with Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers program and regularly participated in events for Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS.

Mazzie's imprint on the world of music extends beyond Broadway; she was an advocate for classical music and shared it with audiences throughout her career. Her passing was mourned across the industry, and her legacy is one of immense talent, beauty, and grace. While she will forever be remembered for her performances on stage and screen, it is worth highlighting how her love and dedication to classical music helped shape her career and the wider musical landscape.
