Mary Jane Johnson was an American soprano, best known for her performances in the world of classical music. She was born on November 25, 1874, in a small town called Sharon Springs, New York. Mary Jane Johnson became one of the first African-American women to perform at the esteemed Metropolitan Opera in New York City, opening the door for many other Black performers to come.

Johnson began her musical journey at Wilberforce University, a historically black college in rural Ohio, where she studied under the tutelage of William A. Credle, renowned vocal and instrumental professor at the institution. She graduated from Wilberforce in 1895 with a degree in music and moved to Europe soon after. There, she continued her studies at the Royal College of Music in London, and at the Paris Conservatory, refining her voice and learning important techniques that would later help her to become a successful classical performer.

In 1906, Mary Jane Johnson returned to the United States and began her career as a professional singer, performing at esteemed concert venues across the country. However, it was her groundbreaking performance at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1913 that really showcased her exceptional talents and made her a household name.
