Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) of Strathmore is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing young musicians with exceptional ensemble training and performance opportunities. Established in 1946, MCYO has been a leader in classical music education in Maryland for over 70 years.
Through its comprehensive program, MCYO nurtures the talents of young musicians from elementary school through college age. The organization offers four orchestras: the Symphony Orchestra, the Concert Orchestra, the Chamber Strings and the Philharmonic Orchestra. Each orchestra provides a different level of challenge, from entry level to pre-professional, to ensure that every student has the opportunity to grow and develop as a musician.
In order to participate in MCYO, students must go through a rigorous audition process. Once accepted into the program, students work closely with professional conductors and coaches to enhance their musical skills. The organization also provides master classes and workshops throughout the year, offering students the opportunity to learn from world-class guest artists.
One unique aspect of MCYO is its partnership with the Music Center at Strathmore, one of the premier music venues in the DC metropolitan area. MCYO performs several concerts each year on the Music Center’s stage, giving students a chance to showcase their talents in front of an audience of thousands.
Beyond performance opportunities, MCYO also emphasizes the importance of community outreach and engagement. The organization regularly participates in community events and partners with other non-profit organizations to promote the value of music education and the arts.
