The Milwaukee Mustangs were a franchise that existed in the Arena Football League (AFL) from 1994 to 2001. The AFL was a high-scoring indoor league that provided an alternative form of football to fans who wanted a faster-paced and more explosive version of the game. While the Mustangs didn’t achieve sustained success, they were an important team in the league’s history and helped introduce the sport to a new audience.

The Mustangs were founded in 1994 and played their home games at what was then known as the Bradley Center (now Fiserv Forum). Their first head coach was Rich Ingold, who had previously played for the Chicago Bruisers and Orlando Predators in the AFL. The team struggled in their inaugural season, finishing with a record of just 3-9. However, they showed promise and excitement with their fast-paced offense that scored an average of 42 points per game.

The following year, the Mustangs made some changes and brought in new players such as quarterback Todd Hammel and kicker Carlos Martinez. Ingold also retooled the defense, which had been a weakness the previous season. The result was a much-improved team that won seven of their 12 games and reached the playoffs. They faced the Arizona Rattlers in the first round and pulled off a stunning upset, winning 47-45 on a last-second field goal by Martinez. Unfortunately, the Mustangs’ playoff run ended the following week when they lost to the Iowa Barnstormers in the semifinals.

Over the next several years, the Mustangs continued to be a competitive team but struggled to break through and win a championship. They made the playoffs in 1996 and 1998 but were unable to advance past the first round. In 2000, they finished the regular season with a 9-5 record, good enough for second place in the Central Division. However, they lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Grand Rapids Rampage.

The Mustangs’ final season in the AFL was in 2001, and it was a disappointing one. They finished with a record of just 5-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1997. The team folded after the season due to financial difficulties, marking the end of an era in Milwaukee sports.

Despite their lack of sustained success, the Milwaukee Mustangs were an important part of the Arena Football League’s history. They helped introduce a new form of football to fans in Wisconsin and provided entertainment and excitement for many years. Their legacy lives on in the memories of those who followed the team and in the broader history of indoor football.
