The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons women’s basketball team may not be as well-known as the UConn Huskies or the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but they are a force to be reckoned with in the world of college women’s basketball.

Founded in 1973, the Tritons compete in Division II of the NCAA and are members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Their home games are played at the Mark Twain Building on the university’s campus in St. Louis, Missouri.

While the team has had its ups and downs over the years, they’ve experienced a recent surge in success under head coach Katie Vaughn. In her first season with the team in 2018-19, the Tritons finished with a record of 24-6 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

One player who has been instrumental in their success is senior guard Rylee Stafford. She was named the GLVC Player of the Year in 2019-20 and is on pace to break the school record for career three-pointers made.

Despite the challenges of competing in Division II, the Tritons have proven themselves capable of holding their own against some of the top teams in the country. In January 2020, they faced off against the top-ranked Drury Panthers and came away with a stunning 68-59 upset victory.

Of course, one of the biggest challenges facing smaller college programs like the Tritons is recruiting. They don’t have the same level of resources and exposure as larger schools, which can make it difficult to attract top talent.

But there are many factors that can make a program attractive to recruits. For example, the Tritons benefit from being located in St. Louis, which offers plenty of opportunities for players to gain experience playing against strong competition in summer leagues and other offseason events.

Overall, the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons women’s basketball team is a testament to the fact that success in college basketball isn’t just about having the biggest budget or the most high-profile recruits. With strong coaching, hard work, and a little bit of luck, any team can achieve greatness.
