Moby Dick, the novel written by Herman Melville in 1851, has been adapted into various forms of art and media over the years. However, it may come as a surprise to some that Moby Dick has also inspired several classical operas.

One of the most well-known Moby Dick operas is by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer. This opera premiered in 2010 in Dallas, Texas and has since been performed in numerous theaters around the world. Heggie's adaptation concentrates on the themes of obsession, revenge, and man's powerlessness against nature, all central themes of Melville's original story. Scheer's libretto closely follows Melville's text, with the addition of certain characters such as Queequeg's wife, who is only mentioned briefly in the novel.

Another notable Moby Dick opera is by composer Bernard Herrmann, best known for his work on films like Citizen Kane and Vertigo. Herrmann's Moby Dick opera was intended for television and aired in 1958 on NBC. The opera is unique in its presentation, stylistically blending elements of opera, film, and television. Despite some criticisms of the composition, Herrmann's adaptation has become a noteworthy addition to the Moby Dick family.

While not explicitly titled after Melville's work, British composer Peter Maxwell Davies wrote an opera called The Lighthouse, which draws heavily on Moby Dick's themes. The opera follows three lighthouse keepers stranded on a remote island during a storm, grappling with their own madness and delusions as they await rescue. The opera's haunting score and unsettling storyline echo Melville's eerie descriptions of life on-board the Pequod, where the characters' sanity is constantly tested.

The influence of Moby Dick can be seen not only in the aforementioned operas but also in contemporary music, film, and visual arts. As one of America's most iconic pieces of literature, the novel continues to inspire artists across mediums and disciplines. With its themes of ambition, obsession, and humanity's relationship with the natural world, Moby Dick remains a timeless work that will continue to be explored and adapted for years to come.
