The men’s team has had a winning tradition, with notable players such as Lamont Williams and Anthony Gibson leading the team to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2002. In 2019-2020, led by senior guard Elijah Smith, the Red Hawks finished the season with an overall record of 18-8 and reached the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) tournament.
On the women’s side, the Red Hawks have also seen their fair share of accomplishments. They’ve made it to the NCAA Tournament six times, including a Final Four appearance in 1995. During the 2019-2020 season, senior forward Katie Sire led the team in scoring and rebounds, helping them to a 20-6 overall record and an appearance in the NJAC championship game.
Despite being a Division III program, Montclair State basketball shares many similarities with their Division I counterparts. The teams go through grueling practices, adhering to strict workout and nutrition regimens to stay in peak physical shape. They undergo rigorous scouting and film analysis to prepare for opponents and often compete against some of the toughest collegiate competition in the country.
In many ways, the passion and dedication exhibited by these athletes are the same no matter what division they play in. The excitement felt after scoring a game-winning basket or making a crucial defensive stop is universal among all college basketball players.
Montclair State basketball may not receive the same level of media attention as major Division I programs, but their commitment to excellence on and off the court remains just as impressive.
