With the release of Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan earlier this year, the spotlight was once again shone on this beloved story about a young woman who goes against tradition to become a warrior and save her country. However, long before it became a cinematic sensation, Mulan had already made its way onto the stage, captivating audiences with its unique blend of humor, action, and heart.

Mulan first hit the theater scene in 1998 when Disney Theatrical Productions brought it to life in the form of a Broadway-style musical. Directed by Robert Longbottom, who also helmed other Disney productions like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, the show featured original songs by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel, as well as classic tunes from the film such as "Honor to Us All" and "I'll Make a Man Out of You."

Unlike the animated film, which leaned heavily towards comedic moments, the stage adaptation of Mulan drew more from Chinese opera and martial arts, incorporating elaborate fight sequences and dance numbers to convey the story's epic nature. Actress Lea Salonga, who voiced Mulan in the movie, also played the lead role in the musical, bringing her signature powerhouse vocals to the stage.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, with some critics finding fault with the production's pacing and lack of emotional depth, Mulan still managed to run for almost a year, closing in March 1999 after 36 previews and 414 regular performances.

Since then, Mulan has been staged in various forms all over the world. In 2013, English National Ballet premiered a new ballet version of the story, choreographed by George Williamson. The piece incorporated both classical ballet and Chinese dance styles, setting the action to an original score by composer Christopher Austin.

Another notable staging of Mulan happened in Shanghai Disneyland, where a large-scale theatrical production called "Eye of the Storm: Captain Li Shang's Story" debuted in 2018. Created specifically for the park, the show follows the character of Captain Li Shang as he journeys across China after Mulan's heroics, encountering various obstacles and challenges along the way.

As with any adaptation, different versions of Mulan have their strengths and weaknesses. However, what remains constant is the enduring appeal of this powerful tale about a young woman who defies expectations to become a hero. Whether on the big screen or the stage, Mulan continues to inspire audiences and remind them that anything is possible if you believe in yourself.
