The inaugural tournament was held in December 2016 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It featured four top-tier Division I teams: Florida, Cincinnati, Seton Hall, and South Carolina. The tournament also included a pregame ceremony to pay tribute to the first responders and those who lost their lives on September 11th.
The Never Forget Tribute Classic has become an annual event and continues to attract top programs from around the country. In 2018, the tournament saw Michigan State, Louisville, Providence, and Florida play at the Prudential Center.
In addition to being a showcase of top-tier college basketball, the Never Forget Tribute Classic serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering those we lost on September 11, 2001. The tournament’s partnership with the Air Force Reserve also allows for a unique connection between military service and sports.
Despite being a relatively new tournament, the Never Forget Tribute Classic has quickly established itself as one of the premier events in college basketball. Its focus on honoring the memories of those affected by the September 11th terrorist attacks makes it much more than simply a sporting event.
