New Haven Chargers Football: A Small School with Big Talent on the Field

College football is a beloved tradition in America, with millions of fans tuning in every Saturday to watch their favorite teams battle it out on the field. While some universities dominate the sport, others are smaller in size, but just as competitive. One such institution is the University of New Haven (UNH), home of the New Haven Chargers.

The New Haven Chargers football team has a long and storied history, having played its first game in 1932. Over the years, the program has produced many talented players, including NFL Hall of Famer Floyd Little and current NFL wide receiver Josh Gordon. The team has also been successful on the college level, winning several conference championships and making nine appearances in the NCAA D-II playoffs.

Despite being a Division II school, New Haven competes at a high level and is often compared to larger D-I universities. Head coach Chris Pincince has built a strong program, consistently recruiting top talent and developing players who go on to have successful careers both on and off the field.

One example of this success is Kamal Abram, a former UNH player who signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Abram was a standout defensive back at New Haven, earning All-American honors in his senior season. He credits his success to his time at UNH, saying, "I learned a lot from Coach Pincince and the rest of the coaching staff. They pushed me to be my best, not just on the field, but off it as well."

Another player who has thrived at New Haven is quarterback Christian Lupoli. Lupoli transferred to UNH after playing two seasons at the University of Maine. In his first season as the starter for the Chargers, he led the team to a 9-2 record, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 27 touchdowns. He was named the Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-American honors.

Despite not having the national exposure of larger schools, New Haven football has become a destination for talented players seeking a high-quality education while honing their skills on the field. The university's location in the heart of Connecticut also allows for easy access to NFL teams in the region, making it an attractive option for aspiring pro athletes.

In recent years, the NCAA has made changes to its playoff system, allowing more Division II teams to compete for a national championship. This has given schools like New Haven greater opportunities to showcase their talent on a bigger stage and prove they can compete with the best teams in the country.

As the 2021 college football season kicks off, keep an eye out for the New Haven Chargers. Despite their small size, they have big talent on the field and the potential to make a deep run in the postseason. With Coach Pincince leading the way, anything is possible for this up-and-coming program.
