On October 27th, 2019, the New Jersey Hall of Fame held its latest induction ceremony to honor some of the state's most influential figures in the arts, athletics, business, and education. Among those receiving recognition were several notable theater professionals whose contributions have helped shape New Jersey's robust theatrical landscape.

Inductees included Anne Hathaway, an Academy Award-winning actress who hails from Millburn, NJ, and has starred in numerous film and stage productions; Ed Harris, a respected actor and director who spent his formative years performing with regional theaters throughout the state; and Jason Alexander, a Tony Award-winning Broadway performer who grew up in Livingston, NJ, and went on to star in the hit TV series "Seinfeld."

Theater in New Jersey has a rich history that dates back to the early twentieth century when pioneers like Eva Le Gallienne and her colleague Margaret Webster helped establish the Guild Theater in Greenwich Village. This venue would later become the iconic Cherry Lane Theater, which remains one of New York City's oldest continuously operated Off-Broadway stages.

More recently, New Jersey has been home to a number of top-tier theaters, including the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, and the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey in Madison. These venues have been integral to the growth of the state's theater scene, providing local actors, writers, and directors with opportunities to showcase their work and collaborate with some of the industry's best talent.

In addition to honoring actors and actresses, the New Jersey Hall of Fame induction also recognized key contributors to the state's arts community, including the late George Street of New Brunswick, NJ, who founded the George Street Playhouse in 1974. The theater quickly became a hub for new works and groundbreaking productions, eventually earning national acclaim for its efforts to champion emerging playwrights.

Other inductees included William "Buddy" Valastro, the star of "Cake Boss" and owner of Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, NJ; Christina McHale, a professional tennis player from Englewood Cliffs, NJ; and Celia Cruz, a Cuban singer who spent her final years living in the northern New Jersey town of Fort Lee.

Overall, the 11th induction ceremony for the New Jersey Hall of Fame was a celebration of the state's diverse and vibrant cultural heritage. By recognizing the contributions of talented actors, directors, playwrights, and producers, the ceremony helped reinforce the critical role that theater plays in shaping our understanding of ourselves and our world. It also highlighted the importance of investing in the arts and supporting local institutions that nurture creativity and promote innovation.
