The Dragons had a relatively successful run during their time in the AFL, qualifying for the playoffs five times and reaching the conference championship twice. However, they were never able to bring a championship home to the Big Apple, falling short each time they made it to the postseason.
Despite their lack of ultimate success, the Dragons were a fan favorite in New York City. They boasted a roster of talented players such as quarterback Aaron Garcia and wide receiver Mike Horacek, who helped lead the team to some of their most memorable victories.
One of the standout characteristics of the Dragons was their electric offense. They often put up gaudy numbers, lighting up scoreboards across the league. Their style of play earned them nicknames such as “the scoring machine” and “the team that never quits.”
Sadly, the Dragons’ time in New York came to an end in 2008 when the team ceased operations. However, their impact on the sport of football cannot be ignored. They brought an exciting brand of indoor football to one of the biggest markets in the world and gave fans something to cheer for during the traditional offseason months.
In 2017, the Arena Football League announced that it would be returning to New York City, with a team set to start playing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. While this is exciting news for football fans in the area, the new team cannot replace the fond memories fans have of the Dragons and the exciting way they played the game.
