Newcastle United FC, also known as the Magpies, has a long and illustrious history in English soccer. Founded in 1892, the club has won four league titles and six FA Cups, but their record in European competition is less impressive.

Newcastle's first foray into European soccer came in 1968, when they reached the quarter-finals of the Fairs Cup (the precursor to the UEFA Cup/Europa League). They were knocked out by Sporting Lisbon after a 4-4 draw on aggregate, but this marked the beginning of a new era for the club.

Under the management of Kevin Keegan in the 1990s, Newcastle became one of the most exciting teams in English soccer. They finished second in the Premier League twice and made it to the final of the FA Cup in 1998 and 1999. However, their success on the domestic stage didn't translate to the European arena.

In the 1996-97 season, Newcastle made it to the group stages of the Champions League for the first time. They finished third in their group, behind Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven, and were then knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Monaco. In the following season, they failed to make it past the group stages of the Champions League again, finishing third behind Juventus and Dynamo Kiev.

Their best performance in Europe came in the 2003-04 season, when they made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. They beat teams like Real Mallorca and PSV Eindhoven on the way, but were eventually beaten by Marseille over two legs.

Since then, Newcastle have struggled to make an impact in European competitions. They have only qualified for the Europa League once since 2004, in the 2012-13 season under manager Alan Pardew. They made it to the round of 16 before being knocked out by eventual finalists Benfica.

Despite their lack of success in Europe, Newcastle United FC remains one of the most popular and well-supported clubs in England. Their passionate fan base, St James' Park stadium, and iconic black-and-white striped shirts make them a recognizable presence on both the domestic and international soccer stage.

As fans eagerly await Newcastle's return to European competitions, there is hope that the club can build on their rich history and finally make an impact on the continental stage once again.
