Newcastle's first foray into European soccer came in 1968, when they reached the quarter-finals of the Fairs Cup (the precursor to the UEFA Cup/Europa League). They were knocked out by Sporting Lisbon after a 4-4 draw on aggregate, but this marked the beginning of a new era for the club.
Under the management of Kevin Keegan in the 1990s, Newcastle became one of the most exciting teams in English soccer. Since then, Newcastle have struggled to make an impact in European competitions. They have only qualified for the Europa League once since 2004, in the 2012-13 season under manager Alan Pardew. They made it to the round of 16 before being knocked out by eventual finalists Benfica.
