The NJPAC Stage Exchange is a program designed to foster new theatrical works by developing partnerships between emerging theater companies and established writers. The program’s purpose is to create new plays that will help give voice to issues that are relevant to communities across the state of New Jersey. Through this collaboration, NJPAC hopes to support the next generation of theatre artists and to bring fresh and engaging work to audiences.
The first stage of the program is a selection process where five new emerging theatre companies from different regions of New Jersey are chosen to participate. These companies then get paired up with established playwrights who will serve as mentors. During a six-month period, the selected companies work with their mentors to produce a 10-minute staged reading draft of a play that highlights an issue or subject matter important to them or their community.
Once the draft is complete, each company gets a week-long residency at NJPAC’s Victoria Theater where they will receive intensive dramaturgical support, technical assistance, and additional resources. The final stage of the program is the world premiere performances. This takes place over three consecutive days allowing audiences to enjoy all five readings subsidized by NJPAC.
This impressive initiative provides aspiring theatremakers with the experience, knowledge, and encouragement needed to transition to the professional level. Critically, it also allows for potential connection with New Jersey residents, thus providing a space to educate and engage with communities that have potentially never seen work like this before.
