Norman Huynh is a classical music conductor and composer based in Portland, Oregon. Born in Vietnam, he was raised in the United States and pursued his passion for music from an early age. He attended the University of Houston where he earned dual degrees in trumpet and composition before going on to earn a master's degree in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
Huynh has gained recognition for his outstanding performances as a conductor and his diverse musical repertoire. He has worked with various prestigious orchestras such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. His experience as a conductor includes several appearances in opera and ballet productions, choral concerts, and symphony performances.
In terms of composition, Huynh has written pieces for various ensembles ranging from chamber music to full-sized orchestras. His compositions are recognized for their unique blend of traditions and modern techniques that draw from Western classical music and other cultural influences.
One of Huynh’s significant contributions to classical music is his advocacy for diversity in the sector. He is keen to promote access to classical music for people from all backgrounds and cultures. Under his leadership, the Oregon Symphony has initiated programs aimed at reaching out to underrepresented communities in Portland such as schools in low-income neighborhoods and social service agencies.
Huynh’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, and he has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2017, he was named one of Musical America's Top 30 Professionals of the Year. In addition, he currently serves as the assistant conductor of the San Antonio Symphony and artistic director of the Oregon Pro Arte Youth Chamber Orchestra.
