Nutcracker Fantasy is a beloved holiday classic that has been part of many families’ Christmas traditions for generations. However, what many people may not know is that Nutcracker Fantasy shares a close connection to Broadway shows.

The story of Nutcracker Fantasy was originally adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fairytale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for a ballet that premiered in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. While the ballet was not an immediate success, it would eventually become one of the most famous and beloved ballets in the world, performed annually by ballet companies all over the globe.

In 1940, however, Nutcracker Fantasy received a new lease on life when it was adapted into a feature-length animated film by Japanese animation studio Sanrio, best known for their popular Hello Kitty character. The film was released in Japan under the name The Nutcracker and the Mysterious Kingdom and was later dubbed into English and released in the United States as Nutcracker Fantasy.

While Nutcracker Fantasy may be best known as an animated film, it also has ties to the world of musical theater. In 1976, a live-action stage adaptation of Nutcracker Fantasy debuted on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Produced by Maurice Rosenfield, the show featured a libretto by Mary Rodgers (daughter of legendary composer Richard Rodgers) and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead.

While the Broadway production of Nutcracker Fantasy only ran for 16 performances, it marked the first time the story had been told on a Broadway stage.
