Oklahoma is a state that is known for many things, but perhaps one of the least talked about aspects is its connection to Broadway. While it may not have as deep of a history with the theater scene as some other states, Oklahoma has still made a significant impact on Broadway shows over the years.

One of the most famous examples of this is, of course, the musical "Oklahoma!", which was first performed on Broadway in 1943. The show is unique in that it was the first collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who went on to create some of the most beloved musicals of all time, including "Carousel," "South Pacific," and "The Sound of Music." "Oklahoma!" itself was a massive success, running for over 2,000 performances and revolutionizing the musical theater genre by introducing more realistic plots and characters.

Another Broadway show that has a connection to Oklahoma is "The Will Rogers Follies," a musical that premiered in 1991. Will Rogers was a legendary performer originally from Oklahoma, known for his folksy humor and political commentary. The show featured songs by country music star Cyndi Lauper and won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It also included a famous stage gimmick where the entire cast would perform on a massive drum rotating around the stage- a nod to Rogers' reputation as a master lasso artist!

In addition to these classic shows, Oklahoma has been the birthplace or home of several notable Broadway performers over the years. Kristin Chenoweth, who won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," grew up in Broken Arrow, OK. Similarly, Kelli O'Hara, who has earned a reputation as one of the finest actresses working in musical theater today, grew up in Edmond, OK and got her start performing with the local theater company.

While it may not be immediately obvious, Oklahoma's contributions to Broadway shows over the years have been significant. The state has given birth to beloved performers as well as whole musicals that are still performed and cherished today. Perhaps most importantly, these works serve as a reminder of the power of the American theater scene and its ability to bring together people from all different backgrounds under the same roof for an unforgettable experience.
