The Old Dominion Monarchs are a college baseball team that represents Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Founded in 1930, they have been competing in the NCAA Division I since 1979. Despite their long history, the Monarchs haven’t enjoyed much success until recently.
In 2016, the Monarchs made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. They finished the regular season with a record of 36-23 but lost to South Carolina in the Clemson Regional. It was a significant achievement for a team that had not qualified for the tournament before.
The following year, in 2017, the team did even better. They clinched their first-ever Conference USA regular-season title with a record of 19-10 in league play. Their impressive record earned them an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs won the Winston-Salem Regional to advance to the Super Regionals, where they were defeated by the eventual national runner-up, Texas Tech.
The Monarchs’ success continued into the next season. In 2018, they once again won the Conference USA regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Although they did not make it out of the regionals, their strong performances illustrated that they were continuing to improve as a team.
The team’s recent success can be attributed to several factors. First, the Monarchs boast some talented players, such as All-American pitcher Justin Verlander, who played for the team in 2004 and now pitches for the Houston Astros. Additionally, the team’s coaching staff, led by head coach Chris Finwood, has brought a winning mentality to the team and has implemented a successful system.
Another reason could be the fact that the Monarchs compete in a conference that is much stronger than it used to be. Conference USA has improved significantly in recent years due to a rise in talent and coaching, and the Monarchs have been able to hold their own against tough opponents.
All in all, the Old Dominion Monarchs are a team on the rise in NCAA baseball.
