The Omaha Nighthawks were a professional football team that played from 2010 to 2012 in the United Football League (UFL). During their three seasons, the team had some memorable moments, exciting games, and players that shined. However, the Omaha Nighthawks also faced controversies and struggles that resulted in their eventually folding.

At the beginning of their inaugural season in 2010, the Omaha Nighthawks were attracting attention due to their former NFL head coach Joe Moglia. Moglia had left his job as an executive at TD Ameritrade to pursue his passion for coaching, and many people were curious about what he could do with an expansion team in a new league. The Nighthawks also had veteran players such as Jeff Garcia, Ahman Green, and Cory Ross on their rosters.

During their first game, held at the newly renovated Rosenblatt Stadium, the Omaha Nighthawks defeated the Sacramento Mountain Lions with a 27-26 score. This victory was highly celebrated by the fans, who had waited over two years for the return of football to Omaha since the last University of Nebraska-Omaha football game. The next games didn't go as well, and the Nighthawks ended up finishing second-to-last in the UFL.

In 2011, the Omaha Nighthawks introduced a new head coach, former New York Giants offensive coordinator Marty Schottenheimer. Schottenheimer brought in experience and discipline, but the team still struggled to find consistency. The Nighthawks did secure a couple of wins against the Mountain Lions and the Virginia Destroyers, but they finished last in the league.

The 2012 season was widely considered the most controversial and chaotic one for the UFL and the Omaha Nighthawks. Due to financial troubles, the league had to shorten the season to only four games. The Nighthawks brought in new players, including ex-NFL quarterback Matt Cassel, but were still inconsistent on the field. The final game of the season was against the Las Vegas Locomotives, and the Nighthawks had a chance to win and clinch a spot in the championship game. However, the game ended up being canceled due to poor field conditions, leaving the Nighthawks without a final opportunity to make their mark.

After the 2012 season ended, the UFL announced that it would suspend its operations indefinitely, citing financial difficulties and lack of support. This resulted in the Omaha Nighthawks ceasing operations as well, leaving players and fans disappointed and uncertain about the future.

Despite their relatively short existence, the Omaha Nighthawks still managed to leave a small but significant mark in the football world. They brought professional football back to Omaha, welcomed notable veteran players, and gave opportunities to many young talents. The Nighthawks also provided memorable moments for their loyal fans, who still remember the excitement of cheering for their local team under the Rosenblatt lights. While the Omaha Nighthawks' journey had its ups and downs, they will always hold a special place in the history of football in Omaha.
