The Pacific Tigers men's soccer team was founded back in 1957 as part of Pacific University's athletics program. The team has since become a regular contender in the West Coast Conference (WCC), and they have made appearances in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship on numerous occasions over the years.
One of the most significant achievements for the Tigers came in the year 1978 when they made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. They had a strong run that season, beating out notable teams like Santa Clara and San Francisco before finally losing to the powerhouse Indiana Hoosiers in the third round.
In recent years, the Tigers haven't had quite as much success, but they still remain competitive in the WCC. In the 2019 season, the team finished with a record of seven wins, eight losses, and two draws, ranking sixth in their conference. However, they won't slow down anytime soon and always work hard to achieve more with each passing season.
The Tigers have produced numerous standout players throughout their history, some of which have gone on to play professionally or internationally. One such example is Jacob Davis, who holds the honor of being the highest-drafted player from Pacific University. He was selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft after earning All-WCC honors during his senior season.
Another notable former player from the Tigers' squad is Steve Sampson, who later went on to coach the United States national team at both the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. Sampson played for the Tigers in the late 70s and early 80s before beginning his coaching career.
The Pacific Tigers may not be a household name when it comes to soccer, but their history and legacy speak for themselves. With their impressive track record, there is no doubt that the team will continue to make an impact in the WCC and beyond in the years to come.
