Music

In the world of classical music, instrumental and vocal works are equally important. Each has its own unique qualities and ways of expressing musical ideas and emotions. On March 16, 2019, the Pepperdine Orchestra presented a Masterworks Concert featuring instrumental works by some of the greatest composers in history including Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, along with a soloist whose performance explored the relationship between orchestral and vocal music.

The concert began with "Egmont Overture" by Ludwig van Beethoven. This piece was initially written as a prelude to a play about an historical figure named Lamoral, Count of Egmont who fought against oppression during the Spanish Inquisition. The overture's intense energy and emotionality conveyed the political and social tensions of the period which made it an excellent start for the concert.

Next up, was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1". The soloist, pianist Heli Liu played marvelously well beyond her years. Her fingers danced across the keys, bringing out all the drama and depth that make this piece so iconic. Tchaikovsky wrote this concerto at a critical moment in his life; suffering from the despair of a failed marriage, he created this piece as an expression of hope amidst profound sorrow. Liu's playing embodied the contemplative elegance, technical virtuosity, and wild energy of this masterpiece.

After intermission, the orchestra performed Jean Sibelius' "Violin Concerto in D minor". Joshua Hong, the violin soloist, handled the intricate dialogue between the violin and the orchestra extraordinarily. His passionate spirit infused every aspect of his performance, making one forget the complex technique mired in music notes. As he moved through this technically demanding composition, Hong explored every hidden corner of this multilayered piece, expertly bringing out its rich variety of hues and colors.

The final piece of the night was Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique". It started with an eerie and ominous note followed by an unbridled display of emotion and imagination, then eventually transitioning to a soft, gentle melody that conveyed a sense of questioning and introspection. Berlioz wrote this symphony at a time when he was deeply in love with a woman he could not have. The intensity of his passion is evident in every nuance of this composition, making it one of the most hauntingly beautiful works in the repertoire.

Overall, the Pepperdine Orchestra Masterworks Concert showcased some of the greatest orchestral works of all time, from Beethoven's Egmont Overture to Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. However, it also highlighted how vocal music influences instrumental works, as evidenced by the performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Heli Liu's stunning piano playing, which emphasized both the technical aspects of the work and its emotional depth. These combined elements in each piece provided an outstanding example of all that the world of classical music has to offer.
