Peter Schickele is an American composer, musician, and satirist who is best known for his comedic works featuring classical orchestral music. He became a household name in the 1960s and 1970s with his alter ego, P.D.Q. Bach.

Schickele was born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1935, and he began playing piano at a young age. He went on to study composition and music theory at Swarthmore College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then at the Juilliard School, where he received a Master of Music degree.

In the early years of his career, Schickele worked as a music producer for Vanguard Records and also composed serious orchestral music under his own name. However, it wasn't until he created the fictional character of P.D.Q. Bach that he gained widespread popularity.

P.D.Q. Bach was meant to be the "last and least" of Johann Sebastian Bach's children, a forgotten figure in musical history. Schickele wrote and performed humorous pieces that imagined what these lost works might have sounded like, complete with bizarre instrumentation, nonsensical lyrics, and unexpected flourishes.

The P.D.Q. Bach concerts were wildly popular, and they helped to bridge the gap between popular culture and classical music. Schickele's witty commentary and approachable style made classical music accessible to audiences who might otherwise have been intimidated by it.

What's more, Schickele didn't just poke fun at classical music. He clearly had a deep love and understanding of the genre, and his parodies were often loving tributes to the great composers whose work he admired. For example, one of his most famous pieces, "The Unbegun Symphony," imagines what Beethoven's Tenth Symphony might have sounded like if he had ever gotten around to writing it.

Over the years, Schickele has continued to work on serious orchestral music as well as humorous pieces. He's written scores for film and television, including the theme for the NPR program "All Things Considered," and he's been commissioned by major orchestras to write works like his Symphony No. 4, which was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra in 1997.

Today, Schickele is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in classical music. His legacy includes not just his own compositions (serious or otherwise), but also all the people he inspired to develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the genre. If you've ever laughed at one of his funny pieces, chances are you've also found yourself appreciating the beauty and complexity of classical orchestral music in a whole new way.
