Knight attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1959. During his college years, he was actively involved with the university's theater program, participating in numerous plays and productions. This passion for the arts continued throughout his life, as Knight remains a frequent theatergoer to this day.
In a 2006 interview with The New Yorker, Knight spoke about his appreciation for theater, saying, "I love the drama, I love the process, and I'm fascinated by what happens backstage." He also revealed that he had considered pursuing a career in theater after college but ultimately decided to go into business instead.
Despite not pursuing a career in theater, Knight has continued to support the arts through his philanthropy. In 1992, he and his wife established the Knight Foundation, which supports a variety of causes, including the arts. The foundation has provided funding for numerous theater groups and arts organizations across the United States, including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Public Theater in New York City, and the La Jolla Playhouse in California.
Knight has also used his business acumen to benefit the theater industry. In 2019, he announced a $500,000 grant to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to help fund a new production facility. The facility, which is expected to open in 2020, will give the festival more space to create and store costumes and props, allowing it to produce even more ambitious productions.
Knight's contributions to the theater industry are just one example of how his impact extends far beyond the world of athletics and business. As a lover of theater and an ardent supporter of the arts, Knight serves as an inspiration to us all to explore our passions and give back to the communities that have given us so much.
